Whanganui Airport is the commercial airport serving the city of Whanganui and the surrounding Manawatū–Whanganui region on New Zealand's North Island. Known as Wanganui Airport until 2016, it lies south of the Whanganui River, about 8 km from the city centre. The passenger airport opened in 1954, and the site has a long aviation history that includes pilot training.
Today the airport has a single passenger terminal with two gates and handles scheduled domestic flights. Air Chathams operates regular services between Whanganui and Auckland, providing the fastest direct air link between the two cities with Saab 340 and ATR-72 aircraft.
The airport features one sealed runway and four grass runways, a sealed apron, fuel services, and private maintenance facilities and hangars. Passenger facilities include a café in the main terminal, seating areas, accessible services, and free short-term parking for up to 60 minutes beside the terminal.
Ground access is straightforward by road, taxi, private transfer, or rental car, allowing travellers to reach central Whanganui in a short drive and continue to destinations across the region.
