About Tuktoyaktuk / James Gruben Airport
Tuktoyaktuk / James Gruben Airport is a small public airport serving Tuktoyaktuk, a hamlet on the Beaufort Sea coast in the Northwest Territories. It supports charter flights, general aviation, medical evacuations and regional travel for the community.
The airport was originally built to serve the adjacent Distant Early Warning Line site and is named for James Gruben, a local bush pilot and businessman who died on the ice road from Inuvik in 2001. Scheduled Aklak Air service from Inuvik ended in 2018 after the Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway opened, giving the community a year-round road connection.
The airport operates from a single gravel runway and a compact terminal building. It is classified as an airport of entry, with Canada Border Services Agency officers able to clear general aviation aircraft carrying no more than 15 passengers.
Located close to the community, the airport is roughly 3 km from central Tuktoyaktuk. The Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk Highway connects the hamlet to Inuvik about 138 km to the south, and local transport from the airport is usually arranged in advance.
