About Toraja Airport
Toraja Airport is the main airport serving Tana Toraja Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Developed to improve access to the Toraja highlands, it succeeded the former Pongtiku Airport as the region's air gateway and was officially inaugurated in 2021 after construction began in 2011.
The airport is located in the village of Buntu Kunik in Mengkendek District, about 31 kilometers from Makale, the regency capital, with onward road access to Rantepao further north. Its single passenger terminal covers about 1,152 square meters and was designed to reflect the traditional Tongkonan house style of the Toraja people.
Toraja Airport handles domestic flights operated with ATR aircraft, including services to and from Makassar, the provincial capital. The runway is about 2,000 meters long, allowing regional connections that previously required long road journeys across South Sulawesi.
Onward travel from the airport to Makale, Rantepao and nearby highland destinations is available by road, with taxis, private transfers and rented vehicles serving the surrounding area. Its compact facilities keep the airport convenient for travelers visiting the Toraja region.
