About Thames Aerodrome
Thames Aerodrome is a small general aviation airfield serving the town of Thames in the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It acts as a local aviation gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula and is used mainly for private flying, flight training, scenic flights, agricultural aviation and helicopter operations.
The airfield was built in 1940 and is operated by Thames-Coromandel District Council. In 2010 it was formally renamed Sir Keith Park Memorial Airfield in honour of Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park, a former Thames resident who commanded 11 Group Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.
Located about 3 km south of Thames town centre in the Rhodes Park area, the aerodrome has two gravel runways: runway 14/32 and a shorter crosswind runway 05/23. Facilities include hangars, clubrooms, aircraft fuel and parking, and there is no large passenger terminal.
The airfield is well positioned for journeys into Thames and onward travel around the Coromandel Peninsula. Thames sits around 115 km southeast of Auckland and roughly 105 km northeast of Hamilton, making the aerodrome a convenient arrival point for private and charter flights heading to the Coromandel.
