About Taupō Airport
Taupō Airport is the main regional airport serving Taupō and the wider Lake Taupō area in New Zealand's central North Island. Originally constructed in 1963, the airport has supported scheduled passenger services and general aviation, and a new terminal three times the size of the previous building opened in 2023.
Located about 8 km south of Taupō town centre on the eastern shores of Lake Taupō, the airport is a convenient gateway to the lakefront, Turangi, Tongariro National Park and the ski areas of Mount Ruapehu. Air New Zealand operates up to three daily flights to Auckland, while skydiving, scenic and charter flights also operate from the airport.
The single modern terminal handles check-in, security, arrivals and passenger facilities in one compact building, with a café, car rental services and parking available on site. A shuttle service meets scheduled flights and provides door-to-door transport into Taupō.
With road links to Taupō and the wider central North Island, rental cars, taxis and private transfers make it easy to continue to hotels, holiday parks and nearby attractions. The airport remains an important transport hub for visitors and local communities across the district.
