About Tambolaka Airport
Tambolaka Airport is the main domestic gateway to Tambolaka and the western part of Sumba Island. The airport was first developed in 1945 and later modernized, with a new passenger terminal inaugurated in 2015 to improve comfort and service.
Located about 5 km north of central Tambolaka in Southwest Sumba Regency, the airport serves destinations such as Denpasar, Kupang and Labuan Bajo and connects travellers with towns, beaches, villages and resorts across western Sumba.
The single passenger terminal is designed with traditional Sumbanese architectural influences and offers air-conditioned waiting areas, a prayer room, restrooms, a children's play area, cafés, shops and parking. A 2,300-metre runway supports medium-body aircraft and domestic operations.
Ground transport from the airport includes taxis and car rental, with Tambolaka town roughly 15–30 minutes away and Waikabubak around two hours by road, making the airport a practical entry point for exploring the region.
