About Summerside Airport
Summerside Airport is a public airport serving Summerside and the western Prince Edward Island region. Located within Slemon Park, it is operated by Slemon Park Corporation and mainly supports general aviation, private, corporate, charter and military traffic rather than scheduled passenger flights.
The airport began as a military airfield, established in 1940 as RCAF Station Summerside and renamed CFB Summerside in 1968. It supported aircrew training during the Second World War and hosted search and rescue and coastal surveillance units during the Cold War before the base closed in 1990 and was transferred to Slemon Park Corporation.
Today the airport is built around an 8,000-foot asphalt runway and a full-service fixed-base operator, with hangars and several aircraft maintenance companies on site. Its facilities are located about 6.5 km north-northwest of central Summerside, just outside the city boundary in the township of Lot 17.
The airport is reached mainly by road, with taxi, private transfer, chauffeur and rental car options for continuing to Summerside, Charlottetown, Cavendish and other Prince Edward Island destinations. Charlottetown Airport provides the nearest scheduled commercial airline service for the region.
