Sumburgh Airport is the main airport serving the Shetland Islands and provides the principal air link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland. Opened in 1936, it has developed into the busiest airport in the archipelago and is owned and operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL).
Located at Virkie near the southern tip of Mainland Shetland, roughly 25 miles south of Lerwick, the airport is served by Loganair with scheduled flights to destinations including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Kirkwall and Dundee, plus seasonal Bergen services. Sumburgh also operates as a major helicopter base for the North Sea oil and gas industry.
