Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport is the main airport serving Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra, and the wider region. It acts as a key gateway for domestic travel and connects Palembang with major Indonesian cities and international destinations. The site has a long aviation history, originally built during the Japanese occupation in the early 1940s and opened for civilian use in 1950 before being named after the sultan who led Palembang in the early nineteenth century.
The current passenger terminal was inaugurated in September 2005 and was later expanded ahead of the 2018 Asian Games to improve capacity and passenger flow. Today the airport operates through one main terminal handling both domestic and international flights, with expanded check-in, arrivals and departure areas.
Located roughly 12 km from central Palembang, the airport is linked to the city by the Palembang LRT, DAMRI bus services, taxis, ride-hailing apps and a toll road, making the journey into the city centre relatively straightforward.
