Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport is the main international gateway serving Banda Aceh and the province of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. The airport handles domestic connections across Indonesia and a smaller number of international services, supporting business, government and tourism travel in the region.
The airport is located approximately 13.5 km southeast of central Banda Aceh. It operates through a single passenger terminal that combines domestic and international operations, with check-in, security, arrivals and passenger facilities in one compact building.
The site has a long aviation history, originally established as Blang Bintang Airfield in the 1940s and later renamed in honour of Sultan Iskandar Muda. After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the airport played an important role in humanitarian relief and was subsequently modernised.
Road transport links the airport with Banda Aceh by taxi, public Trans Koetaradja buses, private transfers and rental cars. Onward travel is also possible to destinations such as Sabang and Pulau Weh, making the airport a practical entry point for visitors to Aceh.
