The airport's history reaches back to the 1930s, when it began as Kadieng Flying Field. A major modernization followed with the opening of the current terminal complex in 2008, which replaced older facilities with a larger passenger terminal designed to handle growing domestic and international traffic.
Located about 20 km northeast of central Makassar, the airport is reachable by road via the toll road, DAMRI airport buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, private transfers and rental cars, making onward travel to the city centre and surrounding areas straightforward.
