About Sultan Babullah Airport
Sultan Babullah Airport is the main airport serving Ternate and the wider North Maluku province. It opened in 1971 and began regular civilian operations in 1978, becoming the primary air gateway to the province and the surrounding islands.
Located about 5–6 km north of central Ternate on the volcanic island of Ternate, the airport connects travelers to domestic destinations and provides onward access to nearby areas such as Tidore and Halmahera. A larger passenger terminal was inaugurated in 2013, alongside a runway extension to 2,300 metres that allows it to handle aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A320.
The terminal houses check-in counters, security screening, baggage claim, a VIP lounge, restaurants, cafés, shops, ATMs and other passenger services.
Travelers can reach the city centre by taxi, rental car or pre-arranged transfer, with a short road journey that depends on traffic conditions. The airport is a practical base for exploring Ternate's historic sites and for continuing to other destinations across North Maluku.
