The airfield opened as Stephenville Air Base in 1941, later became Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, and operated under United States military control until 1966.
A civil terminal was built in 1957 to accommodate Trans-Canada Air Lines. Today the airport supports general aviation, medevac flights, technical stops and airport-of-entry arrivals, and its long asphalt runway can accommodate large aircraft.
