About Snap Lake Airport

Snap Lake Airport is a private aerodrome serving the remote Snap Lake Diamond Mine area in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is operated by De Beers Canada and was developed to support fly-in/fly-out travel for the mine, which opened in July 2008.

The airport lies approximately 220 km northeast of Yellowknife, the regional centre and capital of the Northwest Territories. Because there is no public road access to the site, the airport is the principal link for personnel, cargo and services between the mine area and Yellowknife.

The facility has a single gravel runway, 09/27, roughly 5,282 feet long, at an elevation of about 1,524 feet above sea level. Operations are private and subject to prior permission, reflecting the airport's role as controlled mine-support infrastructure.

After the mine stopped production in December 2015 and entered closure and reclamation, the airport has continued to support monitoring, remediation and site-management activity. For travelers and contractors, charter air service remains the standard way to reach the site and return to Yellowknife.
