Shannon Airport is the main international airport serving the west of Ireland, with regular links to Limerick, Ennis and Galway and onward routes across County Clare and the Atlantic seaboard. Its history as a transatlantic gateway dates back to 1942, when the airport opened, and its runways were extended in 1945 to support transatlantic flights.
Located approximately 25 km from Limerick city centre in County Clare, the airport operates a single passenger terminal with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. It is open around the clock and has the longest runway in Ireland.
Shannon is one of only a few airports in Europe to offer full US Customs and Border Protection preclearance, allowing passengers travelling to the United States to complete immigration and customs formalities before departure.
