About Sable Island Aerodrome

Sable Island Aerodrome (YSA) is the registered landing area on Sable Island, a remote sand island in the North Atlantic about 300 km southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rather than a conventional airport, it is a designated hard-sand section of the island's south beach, with no terminal, paved runway or commercial infrastructure.

The aerodrome mainly supports Parks Canada operations, research and controlled visitor access to Sable Island National Park Reserve. Fixed-wing flights operated by Sable Aviation land on the beach, while Vision Air Services flies helicopters to the Sable Island Station helipad; both depart from Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

Landing requires prior permission and a site inspection by Parks Canada staff, because beach conditions can change with weather. Visitor flights are day-use only and run on limited schedules, typically between June and October.

Because of its remoteness and protected status, the island has no public road network and very limited facilities. Travelers should plan through licensed operators and prepare for weather-dependent schedules and basic on-island services.
