Ryan's Creek Aerodrome is the main air gateway to Stewart Island / Rakiura, serving the township of Oban and the island's national park, walking tracks and coastal settlements. It provides scheduled, scenic and charter flights, with Stewart Island Flights operating regular services to Invercargill Airport.
The aerodrome was built in the late 1970s to support Stewart Island Air Services, and its runway and taxiways were asphalted in the mid-1980s. It sits at an elevation of 288 feet (88 metres) and has a single runway, designated 04/22, measuring about 800 by 66 metres.
Located about 2 km west of Oban, the aerodrome is reached by a courtesy shuttle that connects the airfield with the Stewart Island Flights office in the township centre. This short transfer keeps onward journeys to accommodation simple.
Although facilities are compact and suited to a small airfield, the aerodrome remains an essential link between the island and mainland New Zealand, offering a scenic 20-minute flight across Foveaux Strait and easy access to Rakiura National Park.
