About RNZAF Base Ohakea
RNZAF Base Ohakea is one of three Royal New Zealand Air Force air bases and a major military aviation hub for the central North Island. Opened in 1939, it was built as a bomber and training base and later became home to the RNZAF strike wing before transitioning to its current training, transport, helicopter and maritime patrol roles.
The base lies about 22 km north-west of Palmerston North and 17 km west of Feilding in the Manawatū region. It hosts No. 3 Squadron helicopters, No. 14 Squadron Texan II training aircraft, No. 42 Squadron King Air aircraft and No. 5 Squadron P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
Ohakea has three runways, including a 2,437-metre main runway, and a modern Air Movements Terminal opened in 2014 with check-in, baggage, lounge, customs and immigration processing areas. The airfield is used primarily for military operations and can also serve as a diversion point for civilian aircraft.
Because it is an active military base, access to the airfield and terminal is restricted rather than open to the public. Road access links Ohakea to Bulls, Feilding, Palmerston North and State Highway 1, making onward travel across the Manawatū and lower North Island straightforward.
