About Rankin Inlet Airport
Rankin Inlet Airport is the principal airport serving Rankin Inlet and the wider Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Operated by the Government of Nunavut, it links the hamlet to communities across the territory and to southern Canada.
The airport traces its origins to a gravel airstrip built in 1954 to support North Rankin Nickel Mines operations. A modern terminal building opened in 2026, providing a fully accessible facility with a capacity of around 508 passengers and replacing the older terminal.
Located about 1 to 2 kilometres west of the hamlet centre, the airport is reached by taxi, local vehicles, or a short transfer. Its runway and apron support scheduled regional flights to destinations such as Winnipeg, Iqaluit, Yellowknife, and Kivalliq communities.
With airlines including Calm Air and Canadian North, the airport functions as an essential travel hub for residents, business travelers, and visitors arriving in the central Arctic.
