About RAF Lossiemouth

RAF Lossiemouth is a Royal Air Force station and military airbase in Moray, northeast Scotland, located west of the town of Lossiemouth. Opened in 1939, it is one of the RAF's largest and busiest fast jet bases and serves as a major operational hub rather than a conventional commercial airport.

The station is home to Typhoon combat aircraft squadrons, Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and one of the UK's Quick Reaction Alert locations, reflecting its strategic importance for UK air defence and the wider region. It uses the IATA code LMO and ICAO code EGQS, and scheduled civilian passenger services are not operated from the airfield.

The base lies about 6 miles north of Elgin and roughly 43 miles east of Inverness, with Aberdeen around 70 miles to the southeast. Road access is via the A941 and surrounding routes, and onward travel to Lossiemouth, Elgin, Inverness, Aberdeen, and the Moray coast is normally by private car, taxi, or pre-arranged transfer.

Because access is restricted and there is no public passenger terminal, most travellers use the airfield for military business or private flights arranged in advance. For scheduled civilian travel to the area, Inverness Airport is the nearest regular passenger airport, while ground transfers can connect RAF Lossiemouth with towns and cities across Moray and the wider Highlands.
