About Port Alice Seaplane Base
Port Alice Seaplane Base is a small public-use water aerodrome serving Port Alice, a remote community on Heceta Island off the west coast of Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska. The base is located at the head of Port Alice bay, immediately south of the community, and is used primarily by floatplanes and general aviation traffic.
The seaplane base was activated in May 1964 and remains privately owned by Alaska Logging & Pulp while open to the public. It has a single water runway aligned northwest-southeast and measuring approximately 10,000 by 1,000 feet, with no control tower and no published instrument procedures.
Because Port Alice has no mainland road connection, the seaplane base plays a practical role in linking the community with other Southeast Alaska towns. Travelers and residents commonly rely on floatplane charters and boats to reach communities such as Klawock, Craig and Ketchikan.
Facilities at the seaplane base are limited, and it is unattended, so arriving passengers should plan onward transport and supplies in advance. Nearby airports with scheduled and instrument flight services include Klawock Airport, about 21 nautical miles southeast, and Ketchikan International Airport, about 69 nautical miles east.
