About Pongtiku Airport
Pongtiku Airport was a small regional airport serving Makale, the capital of Tana Toraja Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It provided a direct air link to the Toraja highlands, an area known for its traditional culture and mountainous landscapes.
The airport was located in Rantetayo, about 9 km from Makale, and operated a single runway with a length of approximately 1,300 meters, allowing aircraft such as the ATR 42 and Fokker 50 to serve regional routes.
Because the surrounding terrain limited runway expansion, Pongtiku Airport was replaced by Toraja Airport at Mengkendek and closed on 4 September 2020.
During its years of operation, the airport offered a small terminal and basic passenger facilities, with road access to Makale, Rantepao and the Trans-Sulawesi route. It functioned as a practical entry point for visitors traveling to the Tana Toraja region.
