About Leo Wattimena Airport

Leo Wattimena Airport, formerly known as Pitu Airport, is the main airport serving Morotai Island in Indonesia's North Maluku province. Located on the island's southern coast near Daruba, it connects this historically significant island with regional hubs in eastern Indonesia and plays a key role in domestic air travel to and from the island.

The airfield dates back to World War II, when it was developed in the 1940s as a military airfield and later converted for civilian use. It was renamed in honor of Leo Wattimena, a noted Indonesian Air Force pilot, and now handles regular domestic passenger services.

The airport has a single runway and one passenger terminal. It lies only a few kilometers from Daruba, the main town of Morotai, and is reached by road; onward travel is usually by taxi, private transfer, rental vehicle or local motorcycle taxi.

Despite its modest size, the airport is an important gateway for visitors heading to Morotai's beaches, dive sites and World War II heritage attractions, with connections to Ternate, Manado and other destinations in eastern Indonesia.
