Nikunau Airport (NIG)

Nikunau Airport is the only airport serving Nikunau island in the southern Gilbert Islands of Kiribati. It handles domestic flights operated by Air Kiribati, which link the island to Beru Island Airport and onward to Bonriki International Airport in Tarawa.

Located at the northern end of Nikunau near Muribenua, the airport has a single grass runway and one small passenger terminal. All arrivals and departures use the same compact building, and the airport is used for domestic services rather than international flights.

Nikunau has no large city centre; Utiroa, the island's administrative centre, lies at the southern end of the island about 14 km from the airport. Local roads provide the main link between the runway and the villages, and travellers generally arrange transport in advance because public options are limited.

The airport offers basic facilities for waiting passengers, and onward connections, accommodation and transfers are best booked before arrival. For residents and visitors alike, it remains an important gateway to this outer Gilbert Islands atoll.
