Bonriki International Airport is the main international airport serving Tarawa and the Republic of Kiribati, and the country's primary gateway to the Gilbert Islands and outer atolls. Built in 1943 by the United States Navy Seabees and opened to civilian use in 1945, it remains the centre of air travel for the capital atoll.
Located at Bonriki on the eastern end of South Tarawa, the airport is roughly 22 km from Bairiki, the administrative centre, and around 30 km from Betio. It operates through a single passenger terminal and a separate cargo terminal, with a 2,011-metre runway handling services by Air Kiribati and international carriers including Fiji Airways and Nauru Airlines.
