About Mount Cook Airport
Mount Cook Airport is a small aerodrome serving Mount Cook Village and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island. Opened on 3 May 1936 by the Mount Cook Tourist Company, the airfield was established at Birch Hill Flat to improve access to the Hermitage and the surrounding alpine area.
The airport lies within Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park at the end of State Highway 80, about 4 km from Mount Cook Village. It has a single paved runway and today mainly supports scenic flights, ski-plane and helicopter tours with glacier landings, private charters and general aviation rather than scheduled airline services.
The nearest town is Twizel, roughly 60 km away by road, while Lake Tekapo, Queenstown and Christchurch can be reached by road or connecting scenic flights. Onward travel is generally by car, shuttle, private transfer or tour vehicle because regular public transport to the airport is limited.
