It began operating in the early 2000s as a small domestic air link for the interior, providing a faster alternative to long road and river journeys from cities such as Samarinda and Balikpapan.
Located in Gemuhan Asa village, Barong Tongkok sub-district, the airport lies about 8 km from central Sendawar, the capital of Kutai Barat. It has a single asphalt runway designated 03/21, extended in 2014 from 900 m to 1,300 m to accommodate aircraft such as the ATR 72.
The airport is a Class III facility managed by the Ministry of Transportation's airport unit. It currently supports domestic and pioneer services, with routes connecting Melak to Balikpapan and Samarinda.
Passenger facilities remain compact, with a small terminal offering a waiting area, prayer room, café and basic amenities. Road access to Sendawar takes about 15–20 minutes, and onward journeys can continue by car or boat to destinations such as Tanjung Isuy and Lake Jempang.
