About Matamata Glider Airport
Matamata Glider Airport (MTA), also known as Waharoa Aerodrome, is a general aviation and gliding airfield serving Matamata and the surrounding Waikato region on New Zealand's North Island. It was established in 1942 by the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a wartime airfield and later transferred to council ownership in 1965.
Located about 9 km north of Matamata town centre and just over 3 km north of Waharoa, the airfield operates grass runways and is used mainly for gliding and soaring, flight training, light aircraft, parachute operations and model aircraft activity. It is home to clubs and operators including the Matamata Soaring Centre, Piako Gliding Club and Matamata Aero Club.
The airfield does not offer scheduled commercial passenger services, so most travellers fly commercially through Hamilton, Tauranga or Auckland and continue by road. The airport is close to State Highway 27, making Matamata town and the nearby Hobbiton Movie Set relatively easy to reach by car, taxi or pre-arranged transfer.
Despite its compact size, the airfield is well known in soaring circles for reliable flying conditions near the Kaimai Ranges and hosts gliding events, training and recreational aviation throughout the summer season.
