About Maratua Airport
Maratua Airport is the main air gateway to Maratua Island and the surrounding Derawan Islands in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. The airport has been operating since 2017 and was officially inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on 25 October 2018, supporting tourism growth in one of Indonesia's outer island destinations.
The airport has a single asphalt runway measuring 1,600 by 30 metres, a compact passenger terminal of about 750 square metres and a small aircraft apron. Domestic pioneer services operated by carriers such as Susi Air, TransNusa and Smart Aviation connect Maratua with Tarakan, Balikpapan and Berau's Kalimarau Airport.
Located at Payung-Payung on Maratua Island, the airport is linked by an island road of about 35 kilometres to the villages of Payung-Payung, Bohe Silian, Teluk Harapan and Teluk Alulu. Travellers heading to the mainland continue by speedboat to Tanjung Redeb, a journey of roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.
As a small domestic airport, Maratua keeps the passenger experience simple and compact, with a single terminal, basic facilities and direct access to the island's dive resorts and beaches. It serves as a convenient entry point for visitors exploring the Derawan archipelago.
