About Makin Island Airport
Makin Island Airport is a small domestic airfield serving Makin Atoll in the northern Gilbert Islands of Kiribati. It provides an important air link between the island community and Tarawa, with Air Kiribati operating scheduled flights to and from the capital hub at Bonriki Airport.
The airport has a simple open-air terminal and a single unpaved runway, reflecting its role as a remote outer-island facility. Passenger services are limited, and check-in, baggage handling and cargo weighing are carried out manually at the airfield.
Located about 1 km from Makin Village, the airport is reached by local truck, motorbike or pre-arranged pickup rather than by regular public transport. Travelers are advised to confirm flights and onward arrangements in advance.
For visitors, the airport is a practical entry point for reaching Makin Village and nearby island communities, with onward travel across the country normally connecting through Tarawa.
