Lumi Airport (LMI)

Lumi Airport is a small regional airstrip serving the town of Lumi and surrounding rural communities in Papua New Guinea's Sandaun Province. The facility, also known by its ICAO code AYLU, provides an essential link for local residents, government staff, aid organisations and charter flights in a remote part of the country. It is located close to Lumi town, inland from the northern coast, roughly 120 km from the provincial capital Vanimo. The airport has a single grass runway at an elevation of about 533 metres and a very basic passenger shelter rather than a full commercial terminal. Because the airstrip is remote and weather-sensitive, flights are generally limited to daylight hours and small aircraft operated by charter or mission services such as the Mission Aviation Fellowship. There is no regular scheduled commercial service, so travelers should confirm arrangements in advance and be prepared for basic conditions. Road access to the airfield is limited, and onward travel is usually arranged through local contacts or pre-booked vehicles. Facilities such as shops, banking, and public transport are not available at the airport, making advance planning important for anyone travelling through Lumi.
