About Lerwick / Tingwall Airport
Lerwick / Tingwall Airport is a small regional airfield serving Lerwick and the Shetland Islands. Opened in 1976, it replaced a nearby grass strip and is owned and operated by Shetland Islands Council.
Located in the Tingwall valley near the village of Gott, the airport sits about 4 miles northwest of Lerwick on the A971 road. It has a single asphalt runway of 764 metres, a small passenger terminal, service buildings and an aircraft hangar. Although it is the closest airport to Lerwick, Sumburgh Airport remains Shetland's main airport.
Scheduled inter-island flights operate from Tingwall to Fair Isle, Foula, Out Skerries and Papa Stour, with services flown by AirTask on behalf of Shetland Islands Council using Britten-Norman Islander aircraft. The airfield also supports 24-hour air ambulance flights and Shetland Coastguard search and rescue helicopter operations.
The airport is reached by road via the A971, but there is no regular public transport service to the terminal, so most travellers arrange a taxi in advance or use a pre-booked transfer. Passenger facilities are intentionally modest, with a compact waiting area rather than extensive shops or dining.
