Located about 6 km south of central Le Mans in the commune of Arnage, the airport sits next to the Circuit de la Sarthe and plays an important role during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race and other motorsport events. Its origins date back to the interwar Raineries airfield of the 1930s, and the site became the modern Le Mans airport in 1971 with the construction of a paved runway.
