About Latakia International Airport
Latakia International Airport is the only civilian airport on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, serving the city of Latakia and the surrounding coastal governorate. The passenger terminal opened in 1983, and the technical building and control tower became operational in 1989.
The airport lies about 20–22 km south of central Latakia, near the town of Jableh, with a single asphalt runway and one passenger terminal. Until 2024 it was widely known as Bassel Al-Assad International Airport; the nearby Khmeimim military airfield is separate from the civil airport.
It has historically provided domestic connections, particularly to Damascus, as well as regional international services. As of 2025, civilian flights were suspended and the airport remained closed to commercial passenger traffic, so travellers should check the latest status.
By road, the airport is connected to Latakia via the M1 coastal highway, with travel into the city normally taking around 30 minutes by car or taxi. Private transfers, chauffeur services, taxis and rental cars provide onward travel options along the coast.
