About Kugaaruk Airport
Kugaaruk Airport is the only scheduled air gateway for the remote Arctic community of Kugaaruk in Nunavut's Kitikmeot Region. The airport supports regional passenger, cargo and charter flights and plays an important role in connecting the community with the rest of Nunavut and southern Canada.
The facility was built by the Government of Canada in 1968 as Pelly Bay Townsite Airport and later renamed Kugaaruk Airport after the community changed its name from Pelly Bay. Today it is operated by the Government of Nunavut and has a single gravel runway of about 1,524 metres, along with a small terminal building that includes the airport tower.
Located immediately beside the community, the airport is roughly one kilometre from the centre of Kugaaruk, so arriving passengers can reach local homes, accommodation and businesses within a few minutes by vehicle. Local ground transport is limited, and most onward travel is arranged by private vehicle, pre-booked transfer or on foot.
Passenger facilities are modest because of the airport's size and remote location. Travelers should expect a small terminal experience and plan essential arrangements, including ground transport and accommodation, in advance.
