About Kaikohe Airport
Kaikohe Airport, also known as Kaikohe Aerodrome, is a small airfield serving Kaikohe and the wider Far North of New Zealand's Northland region. Built in 1942 as a United States Marine Corps bomber base, it is best known today as one of the largest grass airstrips in the Southern Hemisphere and remains an important centre for general aviation.
The aerodrome sits on elevated ground about 4 km southeast of Kaikohe town centre. It is used by powered aircraft, gliders and skydiving operators, and no longer handles large-scale scheduled passenger services; the former terminal is not used for regular commercial flights.
Kaikohe is positioned between the Hokianga Harbour and the Bay of Islands, making the aerodrome a convenient starting point for reaching Paihia, Kerikeri, Russell and other Northland destinations. Road access via State Highway 12 and nearby routes connects the airfield to the town and the surrounding region.
Because it is a general aviation facility, passengers and pilots should plan transport in advance. The aerodrome's practical role is supporting recreational flying, gliding and skydiving, while everyday visitor services, accommodation and dining are found in Kaikohe itself.
