Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport serves Semarang, the capital of Central Java, and acts as the main air gateway for the province and surrounding districts. The site began as a military airbase, was opened for commercial flights in 1966, and gained international status in 2004 with its first service to Singapore.
A new passenger terminal opened in June 2018 and is regarded as Indonesia's first floating airport terminal, built on a swampy coastal area of West Semarang. Covering about 58,652 square metres, it handles both domestic and international traffic and replaced the earlier terminal, which was returned to the army.
The airport lies roughly 5–8 km west of central Semarang, making the city centre relatively quick to reach by taxi, ride-hailing, public bus or private transfer. Road links also connect travellers to nearby Central Java destinations such as Jepara, Solo and Yogyakarta.
Inside the terminal, passengers can find check-in areas, immigration and customs facilities, baggage claim halls, shops, duty-free outlets for international flights, lounges, free Wi-Fi and prayer rooms, supporting a practical arrival and departure experience for leisure and business travellers.
