About JAGS McCartney International Airport
JAGS McCartney International Airport is the only airport on Grand Turk and serves as the island's main air gateway to Cockburn Town and the nearby Grand Turk Cruise Center. It is named after James Alexander George Smith McCartney, the Turks and Caicos Islands' first Chief Minister and National Hero.
The airport's runway began as the United States Air Force South Base, completed in 1953 as a guided missile tracking station and later decommissioned in 1983 before becoming the civilian airport used today. After damage from hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, the facility was refurbished and reopened in July 2019.
Today the airport operates a single runway and a compact terminal, with most scheduled flights being domestic inter-island services operated by interCaribbean and Caicos Express between Providenciales, South Caicos and Salt Cay. There are no scheduled international flights, although the airport has international entry clearance.
The airport lies about 2 miles (3.2 km) from central Cockburn Town and roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) from the Grand Turk Cruise Center. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and there is no public bus service on the island, while free parking and rental car pickup are available at the terminal. Passenger facilities include the Cockpit Lounge café and restaurant, restrooms and seating areas.
