About Hood Aerodrome
Hood Aerodrome is a general aviation airport serving Masterton and the wider Wairarapa region on New Zealand's North Island. Opened in 1931, it is named after Masterton aviator George Hood and has long supported local flying, training and aviation events.
Historically the aerodrome hosted regional commercial services, including South Pacific Airlines of New Zealand in the 1960s and later Wairarapa Airlines and Air Wairarapa. Air New Zealand Link's Eagle Airways operated flights to Auckland until February 2014; the airport now focuses primarily on general aviation, charter and recreational operations.
Located in the suburb of Solway about 2 km southwest of central Masterton, the aerodrome is easily reached by car along local roads, with taxis, private transfers and rental vehicles providing onward connections to Masterton, Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough.
The airport includes a sealed asphalt runway, grass runways, a terminal building and an on-site café, and is home to the George Hood Aviation Museum and the Sports and Vintage Aviation Society. It also hosts the biennial Wings over Wairarapa airshow.
