About Hayfields Airport
Hayfields Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Maprik District in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. It provides an important air connection for remote communities in the Sepik region, where road travel can be difficult and the Sepik River shapes local transport patterns.
The airport is located near Bainyik, roughly 8 km south of Maprik town, and is reached by road before continuing on to the Sepik Highway and Wewak. Its single runway, designated 17/35, measures about 944 metres and sits at an elevation of around 466 feet.
As part of the Civil Aviation Development Investment Program Phase II, a project launched in 2025 aims to upgrade the airstrip to Level 2 with pavement strengthening, a new terminal building and associated works. Once completed, the upgrade is expected to support larger aircraft, improve all-weather reliability and allow after-dark operations.
For travelers, the airport offers a simple, small-scale arrival and departure experience, with onward road transport available to Maprik and other parts of East Sepik Province.
