The airfield dates back to the early 1940s, when it was built in the Buluh Tumbang area and later became known as Buluh Tumbang Airport. It is named after H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin, an aviation pioneer and former Belitung regent, and was upgraded to international status in 2017.
The airport is located on Belitung Island, roughly 15 km from the center of Tanjung Pandan. Travelers can continue into town or toward the island's coastal and resort areas by taxi, private transfer, rental car or hotel shuttle.
