About Garaina Airport

Garaina Airport is a small domestic airstrip serving Garaina village in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. It is a remote air link into the interior of the Owen Stanley Range, used mainly for local and charter flights rather than scheduled commercial aviation.

The airfield was built before the Second World War and saw military use during the conflict, with aircraft landing to support personnel in the area. After the war, Garaina became known for a government tea plantation and, with no road access for many decades, the strip was essential for moving people and supplies in and out of the valley.

The airport has a single gravel runway, roughly 5,320 feet long, and today is generally served by small aircraft such as Twin Otters. It lies just north of Garaina village and about 75 km from Wau; the Morobe-Northern Highway has recently provided a rough road link toward Wau and Lae.

Passenger facilities are minimal, so travelers should plan for a basic arrival and arrange onward transport in advance. Despite its simplicity, the airstrip remains an important connection for the communities of this remote part of Morobe Province.
