About Gag Island Airport
Gag Island Airport is a small domestic airfield on Gag Island, in the Raja Ampat Islands of Southwest Papua, Indonesia. It serves the island community and supports access to the wider Raja Ampat archipelago.
The runway was built in 1996 by PT Asia Pacific Nickel, and the airport has operated since December 2008. It was formally reopened in September 2025 under PT Gag Nikel, mainly handling helicopters, chartered light aircraft such as the Cessna Caravan, and occasional pioneer flights.
The airport is located about 150 km west of Sorong, the provincial capital, which is typically reached by sea in around 8 to 12 hours on scheduled ferries. Because there is no road connection to Gag Island, most onward travel is made by boat from the island's port.
Facilities are basic, with a small terminal, a waiting area and simple food and drink kiosks. The airport provides an important but limited transport link for residents, mine workers, government visits and travelers heading to Raja Ampat's islands.
