Fort Smith Airport is a small regional airport serving Fort Smith and the South Slave Region of the Northwest Territories. Its single terminal handles scheduled domestic flights, charters, medevac, and cargo services, and it is the main base for Northwestern Air, which connects the community with destinations including Yellowknife and Edmonton.
The airport originated as a wartime airfield built in the early 1940s for the Northwest Staging Route and was later converted for civilian use. Located roughly 4 km northwest of the town centre, it is the closest airport to Wood Buffalo National Park, Canada's largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Facilities are modest and practical, with a compact terminal that brings check-in, security, the departure lounge, and baggage claim together in one building. The airport is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories.
