About Fort Reliance Seaplane Base

Fort Reliance Seaplane Base is a seasonal water aerodrome serving the eastern arm of Great Slave Lake and the historic site of Fort Reliance. Operating from mid-June to September, it provides floatplane access to one of the Northwest Territories' most remote and culturally significant areas.

The base sits in Chalton Bay, adjacent to Fort Reliance, the site of a Hudson's Bay Company post built in 1833 near the mouth of the Lockhart River and designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1953. Rather than a conventional terminal, the facility is a registered public water aerodrome used mainly for charter and bush flights, with tie-downs and limited servicing.

Yellowknife, the nearest major centre, lies roughly 270 km to the west and serves as the main connection point for travellers arriving by air, while nearby Lutselk'e and remote camps and lodges are reached by floatplane or boat.

Because the area is road-accessible only on a seasonal and limited basis, the seaplane base is an important seasonal link for visitors, anglers, paddlers and expedition groups heading into the East Arm and the surrounding barrens.
