About Fort MacKay/Albian Aerodrome

Fort MacKay/Albian Aerodrome is a private aerodrome serving Albian Village and the surrounding Athabasca oil sands operations in northeastern Alberta, Canada. Operated by Shell Canada, it primarily supports worker and contractor flights connected to the Jackpine Mine and the Albian Sands project area.

The aerodrome sits about 15 km east-northeast of the hamlet of Fort McKay and roughly 3 km southwest of Albian Village, within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Its single asphalt runway, oriented 13/31 and approximately 2,300 m long, handles charter and company aircraft, including Boeing 737 flights carrying workers as well as smaller commuter services from Edmonton and Calgary.

Because the aerodrome supports industrial workforce logistics rather than scheduled public travel, access is generally limited to authorized personnel, and most ground transportation is arranged through employers or pre-booked providers. The nearest major community and connecting airport is Fort McMurray, roughly 65 km to the south.

For travelers with business in the oil sands region, the aerodrome provides a direct but specialized entry point. Visitors should confirm access and onward transport arrangements in advance, since public facilities and scheduled services at the site are limited.
