About Fort Chipewyan Airport
Fort Chipewyan Airport (YPY) is a small regional airport serving the remote community of Fort Chipewyan in northeastern Alberta, Canada. Because the hamlet has no year-round road connection, the airport is an essential link for passenger travel, cargo and essential services in the Athabasca Delta region.
The airport is located about 6 km northeast of Fort Chipewyan and is operated by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. It has a single asphalt runway measuring 5,000 feet and a modest passenger terminal handling scheduled and charter flights.
Northwestern Air connects Fort Chipewyan with Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Fort Smith, while McMurray Aviation operates flights to Fort McMurray. These services link the community to larger centres and onward travel options across Alberta.
For most of the year, travel to and from Fort Chipewyan is by air, with seasonal water or winter-road access. Arriving passengers typically continue into the community by pre-arranged local vehicle transport, and the airport serves as a practical gateway for residents, workers and visitors to this northern region.
