About Christchurch International Airport
Christchurch International Airport is the main international airport serving Christchurch and the wider South Island. It began as an aerodrome at Harewood in 1936 and opened for commercial flying in 1940, becoming New Zealand's first international airport in 1950.
Located about 12 km north-west of central Christchurch, the airport handles domestic flights across New Zealand and international services to Australia, Asia and the Pacific. In 2013, a new integrated terminal opened, bringing domestic and international operations together in one building.
The airport is connected to the city by bus, shuttle, taxi, ride-hailing and rental car, with road journeys to the city centre typically taking around 15 to 20 minutes.
With shops, dining, lounges, free Wi-Fi, charging points and family amenities, the airport provides a convenient gateway to Canterbury and the South Island.
