About Cherbourg – Maupertus Airport
Cherbourg – Maupertus Airport is the main civil airport serving Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the Cotentin Peninsula in the Manche department of Normandy. Opened in 1939 as a French military airfield, it was used by German forces during the Occupation and liberated by the US Army in June 1944 before being returned to civil use in 1948.
The passenger terminal was inaugurated in 1967 and is supported by a single 2,440-metre runway, a cargo terminal, hangars and a refuelling station. Today the airport primarily handles business aviation, private and charter flights, cargo operations and local flying clubs rather than regular scheduled passenger services.
Located around 11 km east of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, between Maupertus-sur-Mer and Gonneville-le-Theil, the airport is reached by local roads and offers taxis, the Cap Cotentin bus network, private transfers and rental cars for the short journey into the city and onward travel around Normandy.
