About CFB Cold Lake
CFB Cold Lake (YOD), also known as Cold Lake/Group Captain R.W. McNair Airport, is a Canadian Forces airfield in northeastern Alberta serving the City of Cold Lake and 4 Wing Cold Lake. It opened as RCAF Station Cold Lake in 1954 and was renamed CFB Cold Lake in 1968.
The airfield is primarily a military base whose fighter and interceptor aircraft support the defence of western Canadian airspace. A civil terminal, the Medley terminal, sits on the edge of the base; scheduled civilian passenger service between Calgary and the terminal was cancelled in June 2011, and unscheduled civilian traffic is normally directed to Cold Lake Regional Airport.
Located about 10 km southwest of central Cold Lake, the airport is reached by road and offers onward travel options including private transfers, taxis, chauffeur services and rental cars.
As an airport of entry with Canada Border Services Agency staffing for eligible flights, CFB Cold Lake mainly handles military and transient aircraft while connecting travelers to Cold Lake and the surrounding Lakeland region.
